Tell your graduates’ stories where students can find them

Every school has graduates whose paths would surprise today’s students. A History Showcase gives each alumni story a profile with photos and a written story, ready to explore in the lobby or from home.

Why it matters

Great alumni stories live in a few people’s memories

Most schools hear about graduates through a newsletter, a reunion toast or a retired teacher’s memory. Those stories rarely reach the students who would benefit from them. When the storyteller leaves, the story often leaves too.

Ideas for Alumni Stories

Then-and-now photos

Pair a senior portrait with a recent photo so students can see the grown-up behind the yearbook face.

The path after graduation

Describe the first job, the detours and the turning points, not only the current title.

A message to current students

Ask each graduate for a few sentences of advice written for students sitting in their old classrooms.

Their school years

Note the teams, clubs and classes they joined so readers can connect the story to the school they know.

Stories from every decade

Mix recent graduates with alumni from the 1960s and 1970s so the collection does not feel stuck in one era.

Quiet achievers

Include nurses, teachers, tradespeople and volunteers alongside well-known names. Students relate to paths they can picture.

How it works with History Showcase

Alumni Stories, step by step.

Three steps

  1. Choose the first set of stories

Pick 10 to 20 graduates and gather a photo and a short story for each. If your team is stretched, Rocket can help get the write-ups ready.

  2. Build the profiles

Staff add each story in Rocket’s editor, where the profiles form a collection visitors can browse and narrow down.

  3. Share on screen and online

Visitors read the stories on a compatible touchscreen, and graduates who moved away can open the same collection on the web.

Setups vary by school; your demo confirms what yours will use.

Best practices

Tips to get it right.

Alumni Stories tips

  1. Get permission first

Confirm each graduate is happy with the photo and wording before the profile goes live.

  2. Keep stories short and specific

Three tight paragraphs with one memorable detail beat a full list of jobs and degrees.

  3. Add new stories every year

Ask each reunion class or homecoming committee to suggest one or two graduates to feature next.

  4. Credit the interviewer

If a student journalist or alumni volunteer wrote the story, say so. It encourages more people to contribute.

Questions

Alumni Stories questions

A photo, graduation year, a short story and the activities the graduate joined at school make a strong start. Many profiles also carry a quote or advice for current students. Your demo shows how a profile is laid out.
